Traffic systems technologies

Infrastructure in many areas struggles to keep up with the growth rates of transportation. Congestion and overstraining of rapidly ageing road networks are the rule. Railways and even waterways are not exempt from similar problems, not to mention airports that are often operating close to capacity. Yet much of the economic activity relies on the possibility of shifting the goods rapidly.

Technology can do its bit to ensure that what capacity we have is managed in the best possible way. Other constraints of modern transportation, such as using resources efficiently and reducing the impact on the environment to the minimum, also have an aspect that is not covered within the individual vehicle, but relies on its interaction with the infrastructure and the surrounding environment.

This Technical Division, currently under development, will address these issues, as well as the interaction between the general trends within society and the various modes of transportation.
