Technical Division I: Environmental Protection Technology

Aims and topics

The committees and working groups of Technical Division (TD) I have the task of describing the state of the art of processses, installations and modes of operation for emission control in industry, commerce, manfacture and services. Special consideration in TD I's technical rules is given to the recording of emission values, which is carried out on behalf of the Government as an aid to the enactment of future legislation. Another major focus is the description of processes for collecting and separating solid and liquid particles, gases and odorous substances. The establishment of technical rules is not confined solely to additive environmental protection technologies but also describes integrated technologies as part of a holistic approach. Under this approach, production processes and environmental protection technologies must therefore be designed firstly to largely prevent the occurrence of gaseous, liquid and solid wastes. Secondly, recyclable wastes should if possible be returned in closed cycles or via networks straight to the production process or made available to other processes as raw or auxiliary materials. Such topics as energy conservation and efficient energy use are dealt with in this connection.

Technical Division I "Environmental Protection Technologies" has built up an extensive set of tools for the implementation of clean air policy, comprising about 130 published standards (VDI/DIN Air Pollution Manual, Volumes II, III and VI).

Main fields

  • Techniques, installations and operation modes for emission control
  • Emission values for particulate and gaseous pollutants and odours
  • Abatement techniques for ducted and diffusive sources
  • Integration of all aspects of air, water and soil in emission control measures
  • Efficient energy consumption in air pollution prevention
  • Measures for integrated environmental protection
  • Plant-specific measurement instructions
  • Calculation of costs and effectiveness of environmental protection
