VDI/DIN Commission on Air Pollution Prevention (KRdL) – Standards Committee

KRdL - Active for clean air

As a joint body of VDI and DIN, the Commission on Air Pollution Prevention (Kommission Reinhaltung der Luft im VDI und DIN = KRdL) is responsible for the preparation of such technical rules as VDI Standards, DIN Standards, DIN Prestandards, DIN EN Standards and DIN ISO Standards. In the performance of its duties in the field of air quality control as defined in § 1 of the Federal Pollution Control Act, the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety is supported by KRdL. For this endorsement KRdL is financially supported by the Federal Government.

Acting on its own responsibility and in cooperation with the public authorities concerned, scientists and industry, KRdL ascertains the state of scientific and technological progress and lays this down in standards. The standards prepared by KRdL are adopted in legislation and incorporated in the activities of the executive.

KRdL is divided in four technical subdivisions. Subdivision I is concerned with Environmental Protection Techniques, Subdivision II with Environmental Meteorology, Subdivision III with Environmental Quality, and Subdivision IV with Environmental Measurement Techniques.

In addition KRdL maintains various European and international cooperations. KRdL's office serves as the secretariat to CEN/TC 264 "Air quality" on the European level. Since 1990 KRdL also holds the secretariat to ISO/TC 146 "Air quality" on the international level. Moreover, KRdL is a founder member of EFCA (European Federation for Clean Air).

KRdL's technical rules are prepared in over 200 committees and working groups with about 1,700 specialists from the industrial, scientific and administrative fields. KRdL's office consists of 18 full-time employees. The preparation of the technical rules on air pollution prevention is governed by the principles and procedural rules of DIN 820 and VDI 1000. Technical rules are published first as drafts subject to public objections. After treatment of the objections, the standards are then approved in their definitive form. KRdL currently has published a current total of 460 VDI Standards and DIN Standards which are included in the six volumes of the VDI/DIN Air Pollution Prevention Manual.

The technical rules describe the state of the art in science and technology in the Federal Republic of Germany and serve as a decision-making aid in the preparatory stages of legislation and application of legal regulations and ordinances. KRdL's working results are also considered as the common German point of view in the establishment of standards on the European level by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) and on the international level by ISO (International Organization for Standardization).
