As a joint body of VDI and DIN, the Commission on Air Pollution Prevention (Kommission Reinhaltung der Luft = KRdL) is responsible for the preparation of such technical rules as VDI Guidelines, DIN Standards, DIN Prestandards, DIN EN Standards and DIN ISO Standards.
KRdL acts on behalf of the State and is therefore supported financially by the Federal Government. In the performance of its duties in the field of air quality control as defined in §1 of the Federal Pollution Control Act, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety is supported by KRdL.
The committees and working groups of Technical Division I (TD I) have the task of describing the state of the art of processes, installations and modes of operation for emission control in industry, commerce, manufacture and services.
Technical Division II (TD II) is concerned with all meteorological issues of environmental protection, both on the nationa (VDI Guidelines, DIN Standards) and international level (ISO Standards).
The most important task of Technical Division III (TD III) is to specify maximum ambient pollution (immission) values for the protection of man, animals and the soil - values justified solely by medical and natural scientific criteria.
The task of Technical Division IV (TD IV) is to present the state of the art in the measurement of air pollution and particularly with respect to highly toxic and carcinogenic substances and substances likely to be released in industrial accidents.
KRdL holds the Secretariat to CEN/TC 264 "Air quality" on European level as well as the Secretariat to ISO/TC 146 "Air quality" on international level. Moreover, KRdL maintains close relations to numerous European and international institutions dealing with air quality topics.
