Technical Division IV: Environmental Measurement Techniques

Aims and topics

The task of Technical Division IV (TD IV) is to present the state of the art in the measurement of air pollution and particulary with respect to highly toxic and carcinogenic substances and substances likely to be released in industrial accidents. This also involves the selection and description of measurement methods for application in the field as well as the standardization of sampling and calibration. To determine the effectiveness of measurement methods, TD IV regularly carries out cooperative tests.

By agreeing to serve as the secretariat for ISO/TC 146 "Air quality" and CEN/TC 264 of the same name, TD IV has accepted wide-ranging tasks in the European standardization field. These include the organizational supervision of international and European bodies by the Office as well as the selection of experts to represent the national position in these bodies.

TD IV "Environmental Measurement Techniques" comprises four committees focusing on "Emission measurement methoss", "Ambient pollution measurement methods", "Indoor air measurement methods" and "Special measurement issues". Over 360 specialists are currently working in the roughly 50 working groups of these committees. The working groups are supervised by seven full-time employees at the KRdL office.

Technical Division IV "Environmental Measurement Techniques" has built up an extensive set of tools for the implementation of clean air policy, comprising about 340 published VDI Standards and DIN Standards (VDI/DIN Air Pollution Prevention Manual, Volumes IV and V).
