Technical Division 1 Engineering, Materials and Technology

The constant, comprehensive updating of specialist knowledge in the field of engineering materials and technology is indispensable for the high technical competence required of materials engineers. The driving force here is the high competitive pressure – which is also a result of the increased international division of labour - and the resulting demand to rapidly turn technical problem solutions into marketable products. For this reason, high-quality technological transfer in the field of materials engineering is of very special significance.

The VDI Technical Division Engineering Materials and Technology sees its central mission here and focuses on the competent handling of application-specific topics in the field of engineering materials and the creation of high-quality networks in this area. It gives support in the following ways in particular:

  • Competent treatment of current topics in study groups and at congresses and specialist conferences. 
  • The elaboration of VDI Standards. These sets of technical rules allow us to make a contribution to the quality assurance of modules and module components. 
  • Specialist information and establishment of contacts for VDI members. 
  • Publication of expertises and specialist essays (VDI reports).


Also, the VDI Technical Division Engineering Materials and Technology is available for personal technical problems and provides a technical and social network of qualified engineers and natural scientists.

 
One of the focuses of the development work in the materials field is to be found in lightweight construction and in high-performance materials and the attendant technologies, especially for the purposes of automobile and aeroplane construction. High-strength steel variants or new aluminium alloys play a vital role, as does the increasing use of high-tech plastics. In particular surface technology, ceramic technologies or overriding topics such as modelling, quality assurance, damage analysis or materials testing are focused on here. The resulting expert knowledge often finds its way into up-to-date VDI materials Standards, thus contributing towards increasing the competitiveness of the German economy in the field of materials engineering.
