The VDI Technical Division Building Services (VDI-TGA) supports its approx. 9,000 members in their professional work by offering them a wide range of services.

The VDI Technical Division Building Services makes knowledge of professional relevance available via VDI Standards, events and the members’ version of the professional journal HLH. The members include the leading heads of the sector. There are close contacts to research and teaching at universities and universities of applied sciences. This ensures that the transfer of theoretical knowledge to technical implementation and the link-up with practical work take place at an early date and that the state of the art is displayed at all times.

A building shell cannot be used without building services. The demands made on building services have increased considerably in the last few years: the focus is on the function, but rooms should be designed to be user-friendly and comfortable in all respects. At the same time, it is necessary to meet the manifold demands for the protection of the environment and the sparing use of resources and in particular for the economical use of energy. As a consequence, the responsibilities of an engineer in this sector are extremely varied.

The technical committees of the VDI Technical Division Building Services discuss future developments and current problems as well as initiating and coordinating working groups. This gives the members of the VDI Technical Division Building Services a head start with regard to new knowledge and experience.

How the VDI Technical Division Building Services sees itself

The VDI Technical Division Building Services sees itself as a moderator and a marketplace for information exchange, innovation and knowledge transfer, but also as an initiator of meetings and activities within the sector. The VDI Technical Division Building Services is the only technical-scientific association to pursue an approach which is independent of specific construction packages, thus showing the way to higher efficiency and quality for buildings.

Long-standing close contacts and constant cooperation characterize the relationship and the exchange with and among the members. The high degree of networking displayed by the representatives of the sector and their high degree of loyalty to the association demonstrate the trust which members have in the competence of the VDI Technical Division Building Services.

The constant work of the members of the local regional chapters forms the basis for the VDI Technical Division Building Services. It can count on the support and commitment of more than 650 people working on an honorary basis.

Building services provide for waste disposal and for supplying the building with in particular heat, cold, air, electrical energy and water according to the requirements and for transporting people, objects and information. The suitable conditioning of rooms and buildings is carried out taking the buildings into account and with the help of technical systems if necessary. As a result, the responsibilities for technical systems in and on buildings are divided up into the following groups according to cost group 400 of DIN 276:

  • Sanitary systems (waste water, water, fire-fighting and gas supply systems)
  • Heat supply systems
  • Ventilation systems
  • Refrigeration systems
  • Power current systems
  • Telecom and IT systems
  • Conveyor systems
  • Systems with specific uses (laboratory, medical, media, cleaning and kitchen systems…)
  • Building automation

Production-relevant systems are excluded here.

Technical committees:

  • Elevator Technology
  • Electrical Engineering and Building Automation
  • Air-conditioning Systems
  • Clean-room Technology
  • Sanitary Engineering
  • Heat Technology

The work of the VDI Technical Division Building Services addresses persons from the fields of science, research and teaching, supervisory and regulatory bodies and industry as well as all groups involved in the planning, construction and operation of the systems mentioned above.
