Engineers need a strong association that supports, promotes and represents them in their work. This task is performed by the VDI The Association of German Engineers.
Our experience and our specialised knowledge from both science and practice make us competent representatives for engineers and technology. In current debates, we are the ones who give engineers a voice and represent their position. Our independence makes us a neutral contact partner for politicians when it comes to issues of technology, education, research, energy, mobility and the environment. We enter into dialogue with political decision-makers and promote the specialised knowledge of engineers through statements, hearings and advisory committees as well as political events.
Our goal is to have a positive impact on the development of technology, innovations and of Germany as a technology hub. As designers who help to shape society, we are aware of our responsibility and handle future technologies with technical knowledge and foresight. Whether it is environmental protection, resource efficiency or demographic change, VDI is already thinking about tomorrow today. We disseminate knowledge and advise decision-makers in the fields of business, society and politics about current and future developments in science and research.
We bring experts together for interdisciplinary dialogues. As a disseminator of technological knowledge, we make exciting and interesting developments public and bring the next generation closer to technology. In a wide range of projects, we promote young people’s interest in technical careers and help them make initial contacts with the professional world of engineers. At the national and international level, VDI supports interdisciplinary co-operations between the fields of industry, business, society, engineers and its members.

Anyone who wants to be – and stay – futureproof cannot afford to stand still. The only way to make progress is with new inspirations and innovations. We cannot limit our actions to the present. Instead, we need to be thinking ahead. A country has to actively use its innovative power to create new technologies, products and jobs for tomorrow. The motto of this year’s Annual Report - “thinkING generations – Innovations for Germany” - exemplifies this idea. The only way to make Germany a futureproof technology hub is to think innovatively and intergenerationally.
